Can I make a critical illness claim if I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer?
Published 24 Nov 2015
Being diagnosed with a potentially critical illness at a young age is always hard to cope with. You might have a whole life planned out with dreams, goals and passions. However, this can be taken away so quickly so it important to know if you are eligible to make a critical illness claim.
A particularly poignant example is breast cancer. In recent years, this is a disease that has taken many daughters, mothers, aunts and sisters, and is only growing in prominence. One group of women that are becoming increasingly susceptible are those aged between 20 and 39 years old.

This was highlighted in a report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare titled Breast cancer in young women: Key facts about breast cancer in women in their 20s and 30s.
According to the report, close to 800 women in this age bracket will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Of that number, 65 are estimated to die as a result – more than one a week. While the survival rate is improving, the number of young Australian women with breast cancer is increasing, a statistic that will only get worse over time.
Cancer Australia CEO Professor Helen Zorbas described the consequences for women at this age developing breast cancer.
“These young women are at a life stage in which they are building careers, establishing relationships and planning for a family,” she said.
“Issues such as infertility, early menopause and body image as well as time away from work and family can have a substantial impact, with long term physical, psychological and social effects.”
Supporting these women is a critical part of the process, especially if the prognosis is not good. This is where critical illness claims can be helpful – providing a lump sum amount to cover medical expenses and other costs.
Of course, it is important to talk to a specialised superannuation dispute lawyer who can talk you through the logistics of your claim and potential for success.
