How women are getting access to superannuation for IVF

Published 21 Dec 2016

Patients are increasingly getting early access to their superannuation to fund medical treatments, including IVF treatment for women. Find out how this is becoming more of a common occurrence and how Gerard Malouf & Partners’ superannuation lawyers can help.

Early access to superannuation for IVF treatment

Funding IVF through superannuation has only recently become a major topic on online pregnancy forums, according to the Age.

Stories like Katie Murphy and her partner’s told in the Sydney Morning Herald have given more women hope. The Melbourne couple was able to secure psychiatric reports to confirm that Katie Murphy has been experiencing mental distress due to not being able to have a child. As a result, Katie was able to access $56,000 of her industry superannuation based on compassionate grounds.

The Age likewise told a story about a woman who was able to get an appointment with a psychiatrist to prove a chronic mental disturbance and as a result received money from her superannuation to fund her IVF.

The Age wrote this increased focus on getting superannuation for IVF started about 18 months ago. More people are also being encouraged to get superannuation to fund:

  • Obesity operations
  • Orthopaedic expenses
  • Dental work
  • Plastic surgery
  • Cosmetic operations

Apply for early access to superannuation

The Australian Government Department of Human Services website explains that you may be entitled to an early release of your superannuation if you or your dependent require it to pay for necessary medical treatment/medical transport expenses for:

  • Acute or chronic pain, or
  • Acute or chronic mental illness
  • and a life threatening illness or injury

The medical treatment must not be readily available through the public health system or able to be paid for in any other way (such as by liquidating assets or dipping into savings).
